Product questions

Questions, answered.

Answers are based on the current product data, public campaign story and creator replies in the public Kickstarter comments.

What is HomeClaw Max?

HomeClaw Max is a compact, always-on AI smart home gateway. It runs Home Assistant with OpenClaw, Hermes and LinknLink services on dedicated Linux hardware. Home Assistant provides the automation foundation; the AI layers add supported natural-language and agent workflows.

How does it work with Home Assistant?

Home Assistant runs directly on HomeClaw Max as the control layer for compatible devices, entities, scenes and automations. HACS and the HomeClaw add-on manager support extensions. Migration depends on the source installation, integrations and backup quality, so it is not an automatic one-step transfer for every setup.

What are OpenClaw and Hermes?

OpenClaw is the agent layer for supported tools and tasks, while Hermes provides conversational interaction. They run alongside Home Assistant rather than replacing it. Home Assistant owns deterministic device state and automation logic; you choose which services to connect and what access they receive.

What runs locally?

The product follows a local-first design. Supported device state, Home Assistant automations and local control paths run on HomeClaw Max whenever possible. Some integrations and cloud AI services still require the internet, so optional cloud features remain separate from the local foundation.

Does HomeClaw Max require the cloud?

No cloud subscription is required for core smart home functionality. Supported local Home Assistant automations and device control can continue if the internet is unavailable. Cloud-dependent integrations follow their vendors’ requirements, and compatible custom OpenAI-style endpoints can route supported AI requests to a local-network model.

Is remote access included?

Yes. Current product materials describe secure peer-to-peer remote access through the LinknLink App without a separate remote-access subscription. It provides a path to supported HomeClaw Max and Home Assistant functions while you are away, but network connectivity is still required at both ends.

Which AI services can I use?

HomeClaw Max supports multiple AI service paths. Use a supported provider with your own API key, an available LinknLink plan, or a compatible custom OpenAI-style endpoint. A one-month Starter Plan trial is included. Provider availability, model behavior, cost and privacy terms depend on the service you select.

What hardware configurations are available?

The product offers two configurations. Both use a 1.8GHz quad-core processor, 4GB of RAM, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and two USB-A ports. The 64GB model has industrial storage and 100Mbps Ethernet; the 256GB model adds storage and Gigabit Ethernet. Select the configuration and regional power supply before checkout.

Which operating system and advanced tools are available?

HomeClaw Max uses a Linux foundation and exposes advanced paths such as SSH and Docker. Home Assistant, OpenClaw and Hermes are the primary product layers. Advanced access supports containers, integrations and troubleshooting, but review commands, backups and permissions before changing the underlying system.

How is HomeClaw Max different from the original HomeClaw?

HomeClaw Max builds on the original HomeClaw concept with productized hardware configurations, selected industrial storage, increased USB power capacity and a 256GB Gigabit Ethernet option. The software direction remains familiar: Home Assistant, HACS, OpenClaw, Hermes, supported Matter, Zigbee and Z-Wave paths, plus remote access.
