How to Use eMotion Air with Samsung SmartThings

This guide is for eMotion Air owners who want to use the sensor with Samsung SmartThings through Zigbee. The setup relies on a community-developed SmartThings Edge Driver and a SmartThings Hub with Zigbee support.

Important: This SmartThings integration uses a community-developed Edge Driver and is not an official LinknLink SmartThings integration. Driver availability, maintenance, and capability support are managed by the community.

Before You Start

Prepare the following items before pairing:

  • eMotion Air with batteries installed
  • A Samsung SmartThings Hub with Zigbee support
  • The SmartThings mobile app
  • The LinknLink App for device configuration
  • A community-developed SmartThings Edge Driver that supports eMotion Air

eMotion Air has separate Bluetooth and Zigbee operating modes. The two modes are not used simultaneously. Bluetooth is used for LinknLink App configuration, while Zigbee is used for the SmartThings connection described in this guide.

Switch eMotion Air to Zigbee Mode

Configure the sensor before starting the SmartThings pairing process:

  1. Open the LinknLink App and connect to eMotion Air using its Bluetooth mode.
  2. Review the device settings that you want to use before SmartThings pairing.
  3. Change the communication mode to Zigbee using the current controls shown in the LinknLink App.
  4. Confirm that eMotion Air enters Zigbee pairing mode.
  5. Continue the setup in SmartThings while the sensor is ready to join a Zigbee network.

App labels and pairing prompts can change as the app is updated. Use the current labels shown on your device rather than relying on a fixed button name from an older app version.

Install the Community Edge Driver

SmartThings Edge Drivers are installed through SmartThings community channels. The driver used for eMotion Air is community-provided, so LinknLink does not control its availability, release schedule, or long-term maintenance.

  1. Open the relevant SmartThings community Edge Driver channel.
  2. Sign in with the Samsung account connected to your SmartThings setup.
  3. Enroll in the channel and install the compatible eMotion Air driver.
  4. In SmartThings, start adding a Zigbee device while eMotion Air is in Zigbee pairing mode.
  5. Allow the hub to discover the sensor and assign the installed driver when prompted.

If the driver is not available or the pairing behavior differs from these general steps, check the community channel documentation and current SmartThings instructions. Do not treat the community driver as an official LinknLink integration.

Supported Device Capabilities

The community driver may expose the following eMotion Air capabilities in SmartThings. Exact presentation depends on the driver version and SmartThings device profile.

Capability Available Notes
Presence Detection Yes Provided through the sensor's Zigbee occupancy reporting.
Motion Status Yes May be exposed as a compatibility capability by the community driver.
Temperature Yes Reported from the eMotion Air temperature sensor.
Humidity Yes Reported from the eMotion Air humidity sensor.
Illuminance Yes Reported from the eMotion Air light sensor.
Battery Level Yes Battery reporting depends on the active driver and device connection.
Button Actions Yes, depending on driver support Event types and available actions depend on the community driver version.

These capabilities describe the device data that may be exposed through the driver. They do not mean that eMotion Air is an official SmartThings-certified device or that every driver release will expose every capability.

Using eMotion Air Automations in SmartThings

After the device is paired and its entities are available, SmartThings can use the reported states in routines and scenes. Examples include:

  • Lighting automation: use a presence state as one condition for turning lights on or off.
  • Presence-based scenes: combine presence with time, location, or other device conditions.
  • Climate automation: use presence, temperature, or humidity as inputs for a supported climate workflow.
  • Notification automation: send a notification when a selected sensor state or button event occurs.

Automation results depend on the SmartThings Hub, the community driver, network conditions, and the devices used in the routine. Start with the raw sensor state in SmartThings before diagnosing a routine that does not behave as expected.

Important: Bluetooth and Zigbee Mode Switching

eMotion Air operates in one communication mode at a time. If you switch to Bluetooth to change settings in the LinknLink App, return the sensor to Zigbee mode before expecting SmartThings to receive Zigbee updates again.

After changing communication mode or major device settings:

  • Switch eMotion Air back to Zigbee mode.
  • Put it into Zigbee pairing or rejoin mode if required by the current setup.
  • Allow SmartThings to rediscover or reconnect the device.
  • Check the device state again before changing the automation.

This is a mode-switching workflow, not a claim that Bluetooth and Zigbee remain active together. Keep configuration changes in the LinknLink App and SmartThings automations in their respective systems.

Troubleshooting

Why can't SmartThings find my eMotion Air?

Check the following:

  • eMotion Air is in Zigbee mode and pairing mode.
  • The SmartThings Hub is online and within suitable Zigbee range.
  • The community Edge Driver is installed and available to the Samsung account in use.
  • The sensor is not still joined to an old Zigbee network or previous setup.
  • The pairing window has not expired; if it has, start Zigbee pairing again.

Why did SmartThings stop receiving updates after I changed settings?

Changing communication mode can interrupt the Zigbee connection while eMotion Air is being configured over Bluetooth. Return the sensor to Zigbee mode, rejoin or re-pair it if required, and then check whether SmartThings resumes receiving updates.

Why are some capabilities missing?

Capability presentation is controlled by the community Edge Driver and SmartThings device profile. Confirm that the installed driver is the compatible eMotion Air version, then check the driver's current documentation for supported capabilities. LinknLink cannot guarantee the behavior of a community-maintained driver.

Why are presence and motion shown together?

The community driver may map the same Zigbee occupancy reporting to both a primary presence capability and a motion compatibility capability. The exact mapping can change with driver updates, so use the capability that matches the routine you are building.
